Kawana IOM Open - 2nd December

Saturday the second of December saw the skies finally part with the rain abating providing a near perfect Queensland day for the regatta. Winds were very tricky from essentially the north providing a significant challenge for the RO in setting the courses as well as the eighteen sailors. Winds from this direction tend to be very fluky with fluctuating lifts and knocks making sailing a combination of skill and luck. This was an umpired regatta which provided excellent racing and great sportsmanship despite having so many on the start line for the one day one fleet event. Attrition was quite high with only eleven boats starting in the final race.

Greg Torpy was the man to beat with a wide variety of sailors challenging him throughout the day. Notably Doug Allen being the main sailor taking it to him regularly before gear failure saw him retire. Greg took the regatta out by a significant margin followed by Glen Fitzgerald and Frank Russell. Well done lads!

All in all a very enjoyable day was had by all with full marks to Club Kawana for putting on another slick regatta. Special mention must be made of club volunteers who without their generously giving of their time the event would not have happened. Namely these are Garry McMahon (RO), Garry Russell, Greg Adams, David Dobing-Browne, Jim O’Shannessy and David Black (Scorer). Many thanks too to 360 Sails for providing some consolation prizes to a couple of lucky sailors.

Until next year!
