Dragon Flight 95 Sail Day

For over a year now, a small and dedicated group has been sailing Dragon Flight 95s (DF 95) at the MRYS Newport venue. From just two boats not long ago there are five sailing weekly with more on the way.

The DF95s are a rapidly growing class and are recognised by a number of ARYA affliated organisations in other Australian States.  Recently we reported here of the sudden growth of the class in the Whitsunday club.

Initially many sailors saw this class as too close to the IOM in size but that missed the point of these boats.  The key differentiators are that they;

  • offer true one-design racing, everyone can afford the same equipment as the winner.
  • are a fraction of the price of a new IOM

But lets's not get too carried away as there has always been a place for both one-design and development classes in both Radio Sailing and the traditional kind.  This is exemplified by the fact that a number of DF95 sailors also own and race other classes including IOMs.

After feeling selfish about the fun they have been having, they have organised a day to share it with others!
