Dragon Force 65 Tri Series 2018

The Tri Series was created as a collaboration between the three South east Queensland RC Sailing clubs with DF65 Fleets, to compete on a club against club basis.

Springfield Lakes Maritime Modellers, Paradise Radio Yacht Club and Brisbane Radio Yacht Club participated in the event and raced for one day at each club. The scores of the top 3 skippers from each club, each day contributed to the overall club result. While the lead changed constantly throughout the series, the result was an extremely close event with only a few points separating the first two clubs. Congratulations to the overall winners Paradise Radio Yacht Club and to Springfield Lakes, a very close second.

The last race day was sailed at Emerald Lakes on the Gold Coast in south-east Queensland. The weather was spectacular with the wind ranging from 15 km an hour to over 40+ in the afternoon. The temperature was a cool 22° with a perfect blue sky. The strong breeze tested every skill required to maintain boat speed and movement through some extremely challenging and choppy conditions.

“The sound of the wind blasting across the water, the percussion of the sails, the bouncing and jumping of the 65's against the waves and colourful boats ...juxtaposed with the solitude of skipper’s concentration and focus as they helmed their yacht through the surging swell”!!

18 races were sailed with boats using the full spectrum of rigs from A+ to A, B and C. Choice of rigs was critical to everyone’s performance. With most skippers never having used C rigs previously, some had to pull C rigs out of a new box.

Sterling performances worthy of note included Springfield Lakes skippers John Heard who won four races in a row plus Andrew Wilson and Grant Lihou who won one race each. Paradise recorded 10 firsts by Mike Jefferys with Graham Cowling winning 2 races as well. That resulted in Mike coming 1st on the day with 24 points, Andrew 2nd with 50 points and Graham 3rd on 56 points.

The overall Tri Series top skippers were:

1st Mike Jefferys (PRYC)

2nd Ian Robertson (SLMM)

3rd Grant Lihou (SLMM)

Congratulations to all competitors who made this such a fantastic event and most importantly enjoyable and good fun.

The racing standard, good spirited participation and sportsmanship were a noteworthy feature of the event.

Thank you to the organising committee, officials and all the volunteers who helped make this such a successful series.

Happy 😃 sailing ⛵️    Mike Jefferys.
