Newport Classic 2018

Conditions were light and variable from the south in the morning and from the east in the afternoon for The Newport Classic for 2018. Before lunch the control area was set on the western bank close to the pontoon. During lunch the course was reset to cater for the easterly wind change.

Racing started with a general recall and this was repeated producing an above average number of restarts throughout the day.

The Moreton Club trialed a new formula this year, limiting the number of entrants to 20. Feedback last year was that sailors wanted as many races as possible in the one-day format with a single fleet and it seemed to have succeeded with 15 races sailed. Of the 21 entrants on the QRYA site, after withdrawals and no-shows fourteen boats were on the line for the first race.

Going into the last race of the day, Aarron Farrar need to finish two places in front of Mike Freebairn to claim the win and he managed to do that after Mike had a messy start. Doug Allen took the third position just three points in front of Glen Fitzgerald.

Final Placings;

  1. Aarron Farrar
  2. Mike Freebairn
  3. Doug Allen

Ian Ashe was PRO for the event and at the briefing he stressed the importance of Sportsmanship in Radio Sailing and a focus on that for this event. With that in mind the racing was conducted in what would have to be the least conflict for an IOM event in recent history. Congratulations to all involved.
