10R & Marblehead World Championships 2018

Both 10 Rater and Marblehead classes have the World Championships in Germany starting this month.  The following Aussies are entered.  We wish them fair sailing and success.

Code of Conduct for Radio Sailing

Competitive sports can bring out hyper-competitive behavior in people and this has the potential to spoil everyone's day and damage our sport.  While racing is underway, the Race Officer is empowered under Rule 69 of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) to warn and then act on breaches of sportsmanship.  But this only applies between the start and the finish of the race.

Fact is that there are no briefings or inductions into any RC clubs about expected behavior so if members behave badly outside of a race itself, formally they are not breaking any rules but they may be discouraging others from participating in the sport.  In addition, most clubs sail in areas accessible to the public and bad language can bring the sport into disrepute.

In an effort to foster a welcoming culture some clubs have instituted a Code of Conduct.  A simple one-page form filled out on membership renewal or joining to advise members on the behavior expected of them at club venues.  This also provides club officials with a tool to address the situation if it occurs and it applies from the race course to the carpark.  But probably the most valuable part of a Code of Conduct is that for a minute each year, the time it takes to fill the form out, each member is reminded of what is expected of them.

Two QRYA clubs have now implemented a Code of Conduct.  Moreton (MRYS) started last year and Kawana (CKRY) this year.  The QRYA fully supports this approach and encourages other member clubs to consider implementing one.

DF95 Sail Day – Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron

DF95 Sail Day – Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron - 28th April 2018.

10 Skippers from as far north as the Sunshine Coast and as far west as Ipswich, attended the inaugural DF95 sail day at Moreton – sponsored by Hobby Warehouse. Three boats were supplied by club members for visitors to experience the DF95's - thanks to Dennis and Kevin from the Moreton Club.

The morning session was scratch racing with some skippers racing their boats for the first time, in conditions that varied from light to 15 kts. in a testing southerly breeze.  The afternoon session was handicap racing.

At the lunch break, Dennis Culver generously gave his time to share his experiences with preparation and maintenance of these boats and it was appreciated by all.  Many of the tips he gave will no doubt make sure that his fellow sailors enjoy their boats more than they do already.

At the end of the racing the prizes donated by Hobby Warehouse were distributed by lucky draw to the remaining competitors.

Many thanks to all who turned up to support the event. Moreton now has a fleet of 6 plus and will be holding competition race days on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month.  The DF95 group sails every Sunday at Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron, Griffith rd Newport from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Visitors are welcome.

ARYA 2019 Nationals Venue Change

The 2019 Australian Radio Controlled Yachting Championships can no longer be held at Newport as planned.  At a meeting between the QRYA and Stockland Newport (property developers) last Thursday we learned that due to an unexpected change in their planning process, Stockland have sold the west bank of Jabiru Canal to Axis Capital who will be building extensive commercial facilities there.  Works include a pontoon system.  

Although a detailed timetable is not available at this time, Stockland expect construction will be started before February 2019.  Access to the west bank will not be permitted during construction.  Without the full use of the western bank, and the overflow car park (part of the construction site),  the venue will not suitable to hold a National level event.

In the next 2 weeks the QRYA will be attempting to find another site for the Nationals to be held. If we cannot find a suitable venue we will have to pass the opportunity to hold the event to another state. This of course is not want we want to do. Sailors in Queensland will miss out on the opportunity to sail in a National event and it might be another 4 years before we have the chance again.

Work is underway this week to inspect likely venues and we will advise you as soon as we have a result.




New Information Page

Recently the structure of this website was changed slightly.  An Information page has been added under the Home menu and the Important Documents section moved to that page.

This change means that valuable information is more visible to you by not having to scroll down the bottom of the Home page.  This change opens up the opportunity to add other information central to our sport.  The first of these new resources are links to the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and an educational and entertaining 'Test' on your knowledge of them.  Many of you have seen this before but we have new members who have not had the opportunity to learn them.  Easier to do it on line than on the water!

Radio Sailing uses the same rule set as the 'big boats' but there are some differences.  For Radio Sailing there is APPENDIX E and this has been linked as well.

The RRS are fundamental to our sport.  They are designed to enable close racing and the elimination (reduction anyway) of conflict.  The fact that we frequently have different interpretations of rights on the water means in part that there are different levels of understanding of them.  Not everyone wants to be an expert but an increased understanding of them will improve both your sailing and your enjoyment of it.
